What causes a CV joint to click?
When the wheel is turned, the ball bearings move quite a bit. When it is worn out, the ball bearings will move to a point, then give way. In this process it pops to the end of it’s travel, causing the popping noise you are talking about. A CV joint will last quite a long time.
Can you drive with a bad CV shaft?
If the boot that seals the CV joint is damaged, the grease will leak out and contamination will set in, eventually causing the joint to wear out and fail. A severely worn out CV joint can even disintegrate while you’re driving and make the car undrivable. It is not safe to drive with a damaged CV joint.
