- Narrow the stereo width to add focus.
- Add a touch of sidechain using Xfer Records LFOTool. This will retain the reverb from overpowering the original kick.
- Adjust the gain of the reverb.
- Commit the kick to audio, including the reverb.
What makes a good techno kick?
Start by loading up 3 separate kick drums into Ableton. Each kick should have a different character. You want one high-end kick with a very short transient, one mid-range kick, and a low rumbly kick. The idea here is to tweak the 3 of them until you get the sound you want.
Should you add reverb to kicks?
As a general rule of thumb, I keep the kick drum pretty dry. Especially on rhythmic dance tracks. However, there is definitely a time and place to putting reverb on a kick. First off, there’s no rule against filtering the lows out of the reverb and just using it to add a bit of flavor to the top end of the kick.

Re: do you put Reverb on Kick and or Hihats? it’s fine to use reverb on a kick, but make sure you set the high cut at at least 400hz. You don’t want bass frequencies reverberating, it leads to a muddy mix.
